This quilt block is a little challenging to sew together because it has so many pieces and most of them are triangles.

However, if you watch what you are doing, you’ll be successful, and your Tea for 4 quilt block won’t look like the Mad Hatter sewed it together.

Spool Quilt Block

With this week including Sewing Machine Day, I thought it would be fun to demonstrate the Spool quilt block. This block is an old and well-loved block – probably because it is very easy to sew and makes some fun designs.

In this block, I have used a brown fabric that has a wood grain for the spool portion and a white fabric with a kind of strip for the center square – making it look like thread on the spool.

These blocks can be lined up so the spools all face the same direction – like soldiers standing at attention. Or, often the blocks are rotated so that some of the spools are standing and some laying down.

Birds and Kites Quilt Block

Birds and Kites quilt block

This is one of the more challenging blocks I have sewn together.

Although it looks pretty easy, I think it is because every patch is a bias patch, it is easy to stretch a side without even knowing it.

Careful measuring after each corner is sewn will help.

This was a special request from a quilter who wanted help sewing this together.

She had received a few completed blocks and all of the fabric to make a quilt top, but was at a loss to begin sewing.

This is a beautiful block and will make a stunning quilt.

Does Double Duty Quilt Block

This is truly a beginner quilt block since it uses only square patches and is very easy to sew together.

This is the type of block that will create a secondary design in your quilt simply by placing the blocks next to each other.

Storm at Sea quilt block

This is a somewhat challenging block because every patch includes at least one bias edge, and often you are sewing bias edges together.

It helps to measure periodically to make sure that your patches are the correct size.

Even though this looks like this has curves in it, all of the seams are straight.

Windmills and Pinwheels are always popular with quilters, especially when they are in the same block.

This week’s quilt block video shows how to sew a Windmill quilt block together.

This block is pretty easy to sew, and features a pinwheel in the center. The pinwheel is on point, making the block a little more interesting.

Pineapple Quilt Block

Pineapple Quilt

The pineapple is a kind of International symbol of friendship, and there are several quilt blocks with a pineapple reference.

This is quite a simple quilt block to sew together, using just squares and half-square triangles.

Plus it is just two colors. I chose yellow to represent the center of the pineapple and brown to represent the outer shell of the pineapple.

Of course, green would be great too, since the pointy leaves of the pineapple are a beautiful dark green.

Idaho Star Quilt Block

This is a fun little block that I designed in the colors of the Idaho state butterfly – the monarch.

This block is relatively easy to make, however it does require that you sew set-in seams (or Y seams).

With a few tips and techniques, these are easy to sew. The one caution is that you be careful not to stretch the bias edges.
